Geometry existed before the creation – Plato

Plato’s collection is the  diploma project of Amila Hrustic, a designer who found a source of inspiration in Platonic solids. The collection consists of five dresses, which use both textile and paper to emphasize the relation of the human body with the structure of the space.

But what are Platonic solids, after all? We’ll stick to two explanations:

1. For those who give a damn about Maths, a Platonic solid is a convex polyhedron that is regular.

2. For those who like fashion, and don’t want to get to deep in Greek history: just imagine some derivates of the cube with more or less facets.

So basically there are five Platonic solids: tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron. Each shape inspires a dress, each dress exploits black and white patterns and simplicity of form. And all this work is handmade: the garments and dresses are carefully crafted and sewn on the dresses.

What I most like about this collection is that it can’t be labelled as belonging to a certain fashion trend. It’s somehow timeless. Actually, even the designer specifies that: Plato’s collection does not fit into the category of everyday fashion and can be considered as a stage costume, and is intended for stage performances, fashion editorials and other special purposes.

Although the the design is not that eccentric, it’s still creative and I won’t be surprised if I see it on a music star the next day. How do you find it? Would you wear those cubes and polyhedrons with style?
