Friends with benefits movie poster

Have you heard of Friends with benefits yet? It’s a movie featuring Justin Timberlake and the lovely Mila Kunis scheduled to premiere on July 22. The synopsis? Dylan (Timberlake) and Jamie (Kunis) think it’s going to be easy to add the simple act of sex to their friendship, despite what Hollywood romantic comedies would have them believe. They soon discover, however, that getting physical really does always lead to complications.

When I first found out about the movie I was a little skeptical: we already had No Strings Attached this year, with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, and the idea behind both movies is basically the same. But then I saw the trailer and I fell in love with it a little. It’s funny and it feels like the two really enjoy being around each other and have great chemistry. Watch it below and see for yourselves.

But their new publicity campaign is the main reason I decided that I’m looking forward to Friends with benefits. A faux-PSA (Public Service Announcement) was released online, with Mila and Justin admitting they feel left out of the social media because you can’t choose a friends with benefits relationship status on social networks.

“We’re here today to talk about a very serious issue,” Justin announces with a serious voice. “Social networks are failing to meet the needs of an under-served population. I’m talking about ‘Friends With Benefits.’ Did you know that there’s no option to choose ‘Friends With Benefits’ as your relationship status?”

To support their cause, the two then advise you to donate your status so it will say “I will be silent no longer! I support a ‘Friends With Benefits’ relationship status option on all social networking sites. Click the link to join me.” If you feel they have a point, click here. “Why are we denying a voice to those who are in a casual, sexual relationship with a friend?”

Although I don’t really believe that people who have friends with benefits would choose this relationship status, I find the PSA funny and I also think it’s ironic that it seems to be targeted to Facebook and Twitter users only. I mean why leave out the recently launched Google+? And let’s not forget that Timberlake  took a stake in Myspace.

What do you think? Would you change your status to ‘friends with benefits’ if given this option?
