Ah, the 90s – a decade that gave us ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana and ‘Creep’ by Radiohead, but also some not so glamorous tunes, such as ‘Ice Ice Baby’ by Vanilla Ice or ‘Macarena’ by Los del Rio. The Rolling Stones magazine wanted to find out which are the  worst songs of the nineties, by inviting their readers to nominate horrible tunes.

All the ten songs listed below were hugely popular, and a lot of them still are, even today. We hear them from time to time and they help us remember how, back then, we were… [insert appropriate adjective here – if you don’t find any, go with younger]. But, other than that, don’t tell me you would be able to listen to any of these songs every day or three times in a row, for example.

So, here you have it – the worst songs of the nineties. Enjoy!

10. 4 Non Blondes – What’s up

I used to sing this at karaoke all the time. Not very good.

9. Right Said Fred – I’m too sexy

The lyrics are kind of funny, but the whole song is seriously messed up. And I’m seriously tired of it.

8. Baha Men – Who let the dogs out?

Now really, ‘Who let the dogs out?’. They were better off singing ‘Who fed the chickens today?’ or ‘Who pulled my kitty’s tail?’.

7. Celine Dion – My heart will go on

I admit it, I was a huge fan of the movie and of the song. Still am of the movie, of the song not so much. There was actually an episode from ‘Supernatural‘ where an angel decided to go back in time and NOT sink the Titanic, because he hated Celine Dion. Thus, ‘My heart will go on’ was never composed. Apparently some people really have a problem with it.

6. Hanson – MMMBop

When you hear the first ‘oh’ in the song you could bet it’s sung by a woman. Anyway, they grew up nicely. Two of them anyway.

5. Chumbawamba – Tubthumping

I could have swore this song is called ‘I get knocked down’. Silly me.

4. Vanilla Ice – Ice ice baby

Not giving Queen credit for the bassline wasn’t very nice of you, Vanilla Ice. Karma.

3. Billy Ray Cyrus – Achy breaky heart

This is actually Miley Cyrus’s father. Nuff said.

2. Los del Rio – Macarena

I’m sure you can still dance it. It’s like riding a bike.

1. Aqua – Barbie girl

‘Undress me everywhere’! Gotta love this tune.

Which other songs do you think should have make it on the list? Personally, I’m a little disappointed I didn’t see ‘Coco Jambo‘ somewhere in top 3.
