Most of us are fed up with high school movies – almost always the jock falls in love with the nerdy girl and they live happily ever after, or at least until college. High school movies may feature silly pranks, awkward sex jokes and bullying scenes. But there are some movies that, despite all these factors, are still worth watching. Take a look below:

Superbad

Jonah Hill and Michael Cera play two co-dependent high school seniors with great chemistry, who have to face some separation anxiety. I found the movie to be extremely funny, despite my low expectations. It was released in 2007.

Mean Girls

In this particular movie hierarchy takes on a new level of cruelty. If you thought boys are the ones with the bullying, wait until you enter girl world. I have to admit tough I’ve never seen cuter backstabbing frenemies. The screenplay was written by the funny Tina Fey, and the movie stars Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan, Lizzy Caplan and Amanda Seyfried. It was released in 2004.

10 Things I Hate About You

The movie may have been based on Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’, but it’s still got classic prom scenes and romance on the football field. A movie for every guy who’s ever tried. Starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, released in 1999.

Never Been Kissed

She’s never been hip. Never been cool. Until she gets the chance to go back in high school as an undercover journalist, and with the help of her brother finds out how being popular really feels. Starring Drew Barrymore, David Arquette and Michael Vartan, released in 1999.

Dead Poets Society

English professor John Keating inspires his students to love of poetry and to seize the day. Oh Captain, my Captain! Even if it was released in 1989, the power and inspiration of the movie can be felt even today. It stars Robin Williams.

The Breakfast Club

Is there any movie more iconic? Five wildly disparate students spend a Saturday doing detention in the library under the supervision of their principal. We have the jock, the nerd, the rebel, the princess, and the basket-case. Through the day they share their stories and they discover new friendships. Released in 1985.

American Pie

Well, what else is there to say about American Pie? Maybe that if you haven’t seen it yet, you probably lived in a cage for the last 12 years.

Not Another Teen Movie

The ultimate spoof of all high school movies out there. Released in 2001 and still wildly entertaining.

Easy A

Surprisingly funny and fresh and the most recent high school movie I could find that is actually worth watching. Starring Penn Badgley, Emma Stone and Amanda Bynes, released last year.

What other movies do you think should have made our list? Don’t be shy and sound off in the comments.
