A new year means new shows to get excited about! If you’re planning on adding some new TV series on your watch list, take a look at the previews below and mark your calendars. Television’s midseason might not come with as much hype as the start of the fall season of TV, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t got plenty to offer, from comedies to chilling thrillers and animated series.

Work It

Personally, I’m a little skeptical about this one. Let’s face it: this comedy centers on two friends who masquerade as women to find good-paying jobs. Doesn’t sound very promising. Yet, I’m curious if Ben Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco will make it work. The show will premiere on January 3, on ABC.

The Firm

Based on the blockbuster feature film and best-selling novel by world-renowned author John Grisham, ‘The Firm’ continues the story of attorney Mitchell McDeere and his family 10 years after the events of the film and novel. I miss Juliette Lewis, so I will definitely give this one a chance. It also stars Josh Lucas, Molly Parker, Callum Keith Rennie and Natasha Calis. Premieres on January 8, on NBC.

House of Lies

Drumroll, the lovely Kristen Bell is back in a comedy which centers around a self-loathing management consultant from a top-tier firm. Marty (played by Don Cheadle), a highly successful, cutthroat consultant is never above, using any means necessary to get his clients the information they want. Also premieres on January 8, on Showtime.

Are You There Chelsea?

Inspired by the best-selling books from actress/comedian Chelsea Handler, the show follows the exploits of the twenty something Chelsea (Laura Prepon), an opinionated and unapologetic young woman who lives life to the fullest as a cocktail waitress, friend, daughter, sister and sexually dynamic ‘advanced drinker’. Sounds promising. Premieres on January 11, on NBC.

The Finder

Also knows as Bones‘ spin-off. I’m not a big fan of spin-offs, I’ll give you that, and I wasn’t extremely pleased with the backdoor pilot (which aired in the sixth season of Bones). But, considering the show was also created by Hart Hanson (responsible for Bones) maybe it won’t be that bad. Premieres on January 12, on FOX.

Rob

This comedy centers on solitary guy, Rob (Schneider), who marries into a huge Mexican-American family. Also premieres on the 12th, on CBS.

Napoleon Dynamite

Follows the misadventures of an awkward high school teenager and his quirky friends as they struggle to navigate life in rural Idaho. Premieres on January 15, on FOX.

Alcatraz

Probably the most expected TV show that will premiere this midseason. The show is produced by the one and only J.J. Abrams (responsible for ‘Lost’), ‘Alcatraz’ is centered on America’s most infamous prison and one-time home to the nation’s most notorious murderers, rapists, kidnappers and thieves. Premieres on the 16th, also on FOX.

Unsupervised

An animated, half-hour comedy about two eternally optimistic best friends who are navigating the harsh landscape of adolescence and trying to do what’s right despite having no parental guidance whatsoever. Premieres on January 19, on FX.

The show takes a provocative look at the world of horse racing – the owners, gamblers, jockeys and diverse gaming industry players. Premieres on January 29, on HBO.
