Now that the autumn is nearly over and winter is kicking in with its cold weather and snowy landscapes, people tend to feel funny. You either cold or getting a cold. November is a whole bunch of mixed feelings and songs about it are the living proof. Music is also one of the best ways to express your emotions of all kind.

November

So I took the liberty to take a few songs which have November in their title or lyrics and see what do they express, what kind of state do they put you in.

Sleeping with Sirens – November

For me this song is a reminder of both an end and a goodbye story, as well as the hope for a new beginning. Although the lyrics are slightly sad, I also feel some hope in this song. What do you think?

Tell my loved ones that I wish them well
There’s a fire in this November sky
It’s burning up, burning up
They’ll remember me tonight
There’s a fire in this November sky
It’s building up, building up
And they’ll remember me tonight
And this time, in this town

Guns N’ Roses – November Rain

Well, this one I think most of us can recognize. A story about love and heart break. It’s such an iconic song that simply touches your heart.

If we could take the time
To lay it on the line
I could rest my head
Just knowin’ that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
Then darlin’ don’t refrain
Or I’ll just end up walkin’
In the cold November rain

Gabrielle Aplin – November

Another brokenhearted song, sweet and mellow bit with a hint on frustration. Or is it liberation? Well it’s really hard to perfectly grasp the intent, I guess we each can interpret it in our own way.

I always used to love November
But now it always floods with rain
I always used to love November
But now it always floods with rain
Oh how can I forgive?
Those words will stain forever

Wyclef Jean – Gone till November

Another kind of song and a different message. I see it as a story of a struggle, for love, for money, for a better life.

Every time i make a run, girl you turn around and cry, I ask myself why
Oh why, see you must understand i can’t work a 9 to 5, so I’ll be gone til
November, said I’ll be gone till November I’ll be gone till November, you
Tell my girl yo i be gone till November, I’ll be gone till November ill
Be gone til November, you tell my girl yo I’ll be gone till November,
January, February, March, April, May, I see you cryin but girl I can’t
Stay I’ll be gone till November, I’ll be gone till November…
And give a kiss to my mother

Gorillaz – November Has Come

Well, this one I think it’s about the inevitable end of a violent life. It may sound similar to you, or maybe not, by I think it references to November as the end that comes after a struggling life. In literature especially, November is often associated with the concept of death, well this might not be the case but at least that’s how I see it.

Something is starting today
Where did he go why you want it to be?
Well you know November has come
When it’s gone away

So, as I said, November can play tricks on people. Here is a comprehensive list of songs with November in their title:

  • Mad Season – November Hotel
  • Morrissey – November Spawned Monster
  • The Avett Brothers – November Blue
  • The National – Mr. November
  • Folk Implosion – Fall Into November
  • Drake – November 18th
